Heather and Sammy
My entire life I have been known as a cat person. And, this is because I had wonderful cats my entire life. They just seemed better in every way: mostly no maintenance and therefore inexpensive, they clean themselves, and they even cover up their own poop. What else could you ask for? Well, my boyfriend is a dog person and has always wanted a puppy. I felt like I was holding him back, so I bought one for him, our golden retriever Sammy. He told me that it would only take a couple months, and then I would be a dog person for life.
Well… For the first couple months, he peed about five or six times in the house every day. He went to the vet numerous times. He went to day care because he can not be alone. On the surface, it seemed like I had been right all along.
However, I just love my puppy’s face. I can not help but get out my phone and stare at all his puppy pictures while I sit at my desk. I have to admit that I never did that with any of my cats. I also tend to his every need just like a human child.
I wanted to share with you my personal experiences because I thought maybe you could help. Maybe we can help each other. I am sure there are other first time dog owners out there. I am almost 49 years old and Sammy is my first dog, so I have a steep learning curve to climb. I will diary Sammy’s adventures for you and see how far we can take it with our training. I have imagined training Sammy along the way so that maybe he could win a dog contest one day. I know that I have high hopes, but maybe with a little help, we can do it. Wish me luck!
