My adventure as a dog owner officially began at 48 years old. I was expecting it to be somewhat similar to my childhood experience of raising kittens. I found them to be effortless and enjoyable company. When my beautiful golden retriever puppy Sammy first came home for the first time, I was in for quite an awakening.Â
I never expected to feel as though I had given birth to this puppy. I loved him instantly, and in a way that I had never felt before about most of my cats. However, I was suddenly responsible for watching him almost every second of the day. All of a sudden, he got into that pose, and he was peeing all over the house. He is now potty trained, thank goodness, but I had never expected that my first child would be a puppy.
