Unleash the adventures of a golden retriever puppy

We went to the vet the other day, and she described Sam as the perfect dog except for his minor issue with allergies. He always seems to get compliments wherever he goes. All he needs to do is give out that sweet smile of his. He is a very good boy, but he does have quite the mind of his own.

He has I am excited to say finally giving up the bringing in several sticks every night habit. He would bring in a stick, munch it up, and then leave it scattered around the living room. Once it was broken into pieces, he seemed to lose interest. Now, he is bringing them in less and less. Thank goodness on that one.

I did call Sam’s trainer to have another issue because of a couple issues he is still having on his off leash walks. He likes to run far ahead, and then if he sees a dog he likes he won’t come back. He is also disruptive when he meets other dogs. He starts jumping around, which stirs everyone up. And then if a dog gets aggressive with him, he just lays on his back and looks to us to fix the problem.

I have read online that his behavior is a training issue. So basically my fault, since I have been filling the role of his trainer. I try my best, but it does not come that natural to me. I am hoping to get better and better at it. I do try.

I have our training lesson planned at our favorite place to walk him off leash. I am hoping to get some good tips on getting him to come back when he is with another dog, not jump around when interacting with other dogs, and to be able to somewhat defend himself if necessary.

Soulful Escapes

For the most part, I am so glad that Sam is a submissive dog. I am never afraid that he is going to bite either another dog or human. He is also not interested in killing small animals. He seems to want to play with them as well. We had a skunk encounter the other night. He just wanted to play then as well. He was lucky that time, because the skunk did not want to play.

My only worry though is that Sam encounters a real aggressive dog that might hurt him and that I am not quick enough to intervene. I hope that training lesson will help. I will keep you posted.
