Pawsome Pup Tales

Unleash the adventures of a golden retriever puppy

I am definitely curious to hear any opinions on this. Sammy has been staring down our empty hall lately like he sees something which is not there. He will even bark occasionally. When we look down the hall to see what he is staring at, there is never anything there.

I looked online and found that animals are very pure, so they are able to see spirits much better than humans can. That is what makes me wonder if he really  does see something, or if staring down the hall at nothing is something that dogs do. Since he is my first puppy, I don’t have anything to reference on that.

He seems to do this more at night than during the day. He seems very restless at night, so he could be anxious. If it is not a spirit, I would like to find ways to make him calmer at night. First, we bought a night light, because we thought he might be scared of the dark. But, then we put the night light away, because it seemed like he was staring at the night light.

I also have tried different dog beds trying to make Sammy less restless at night. I bought one that seemed like more of an igloo, since dogs are supposed to be den animals that like a dark, enclosed space. Sammy never liked that bed. He barely even went in it.

I think the igloo bed reminded him of the crate we first tried to put him in at night. He definitely hated that. We tried the crate the first night we brought him home, and then watched as he just clawed and clawed at it until we could not take it anymore, and we let him out.

Soulful Escapes

If there are any dog beds that help with anxiety, but are not enclosed, I would like to know. Or, if there are any ways to make him less restless at night that I have not mentioned, I would like to know as well. I have the pheromone diffusers going from Thunder Ease, but not sure what else I can use.

I am also going to try again with a doggie door to see if he is restless because all the doors are locked at night. Perhaps he feels like he can’t get out if he needs to. That is my latest theory.
