Unleash the adventures of a golden retriever puppy

So, I wrapped up about 20 different toys for Sammy’s first Christmas. I wanted to make it really special for him. I had seen other dogs who enjoyed unwrapping gifts themselves.

I felt that it was possible I was overdoing it a bit, but you can get alot of dog toys online fairly cheaply, so I decided why not. He was a good boy too with all the gifts. One of the toys, a giant candy cane was left unwrapped, and at least with mom, refrained from stealing the candy cane toy that had been under the tree for at least a week prior to Christmas.

For Christmas Eve, we took Sam down to a manger scene that had live animals, including miniature donkeys. It has been a Christmas tradition of ours to go there every year.

I had expected Sam to walk like he had been doing to the park with me. He heels well, and doesn’t pull on the leash too much.

Once we pull up to the manger scene however, Sam jumps out of the back of the car and immediately starts pulling hard. He had done this once before at a new place, so I should have know better. I said heel, and pulled up on the leash, but he just kept pulling hard.

Soulful Escapes

Once we got to the animals, he wrapped himself around me with the leash, and even jumped up in front of me and nicked my face with his nails. I thought this is definitely not going well.

Once we finally settled, he was a little better. I got him to sit and we looked at the animals together. But, going back to the car, he did the same hard pulling on the leash. I thought that it was time for more training once I got back in the car.  Christmas morning we all opened our gifts and then I went back to the tree with Sam and his dad to open his gifts under the tree together. Sam did not try to open anything himself. I unwrapped toy after toy for him. I think it was actually a bit overwhelming for him. He did not know what toy to play with since there were so many in front of him. Next year I think mom will take it a bit more easy with the dog gifts.
