I would really like to know if anyone else has a dog that tries to speak real words, if that is even possible.
I’m not sure if this is all in my imagination, but I feel like Sammy tries to speak. And, I don’t mean growl or bark, he wants to speak like a human.
He sometimes looks at me and makes sounds in his throat. The closest he has gotten to speaking real words are howls that sound like a drawn out no and hello. I have tried saying hello back in the same way to see if I could get him to repeat it.

The other night, his mobile groomer arrived at the house late, and he stopped several times as I tried to get him to go to the grooming van. About halfway to the van, he stopped and made those noises in his throat. I am sure that he was trying to say something then, and it probably had to do with not wanting a bath.
I have read that Golden Retrievers are the third smartest dogs out there. They only seem to be beaten by the Border Collie and the Poodle.
Soulful Escapes
So, it does seem entirely possible, that if they could learn other tricks, they could also learn howls that sound like words so they can communicate better.
I would like to hear any feedback you might have on this.
