Unleash the adventures of a golden retriever puppy

Sam loves to have his parents escort him outside at night. He goes right to the outside slider, turns his head around, and then stares with his big brown eyes. He seems to be saying, “Who is coming with me?” If you don’t get up, he might lay down for a couple minutes, but then he usually goes back for the stare down.

He is definitely hard to say no to. Sometimes when he goes to the door, he does have some business to do outside. However, the other half of the time, he just wants to chew on a branch or search for a pine cone.

During the summer time, taking him outside can be fun, but during the winter it can be more of a chore. I would love to hear any feedback on this. I see videos of golden retrievers with their sticks, so I think it might be a breed thing wanting to go outside and get a stick.

I think at night we average at least 6 times going outside and standing there with Sam in the cold. Sometimes, I really just feel like watching a movie uninterrupted. He is almost 12 months old now, so it seems like he should be okay going outside by himself. Any advice?

I feel like Sam is not the bravest of dogs, so maybe that could be part of him not wanting to be outside alone. Maybe there is a way to boost his confidence. If there is some kind of training advice, I would appreciate that as well.

Soulful Escapes

Perhaps, there is a way to make our backyard feel more safe for Sam. There are occasionally other animals that will visit the yard, but usually they are small since there is a fence around the entire yard. They can only make it in through the rod iron or if they jumped a large fence.

Sam does seem to change habits easily but this one has lasted awhile, unfortunately.
